Have you ever looked at the ingredients list on one of your skincare products and felt like you needed a translator?
The truth is, many of us are completely unaware of what goes into the products we use on our skin every day. And that’s kind of a problem.
There’s a growing body of evidence showing that certain ingredients in our personal care products can have a negative impact on hormone health. Proper hormone function is essential to general health and fertility, so it’s important to start paying attention to those toxic ingredients that are sneaking into our products.
Thankfully, when it comes to skincare, switching over to clean, non-toxic products doesn’t have to be hard. There are quite a few skincare brands that prioritize the safety of their products without compromising on quality. Having sampled quite a few of these brands, I’m excited to share with you which ones are worth making the switch for.
In addition to being non-toxic, all of these brands are also cruelty-free!
Read on to learn how you can make the transition to non-toxic skincare no matter your skin’s needs or your budget.

If there’s a brand you love that’s not on this list, it still may be a clean skincare brand. A great way to check the toxicity rating of your products is to use a free service like the Think Dirty App or the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database. Both of these services allow you to search for brands and products and learn about the toxicity of their ingredients.
I wish I’d known about this skincare brand five years ago! I can’t praise Indie Lee highly enough. Every product I’ve tried from this brand has been absolutely wonderful. The price point may seem a bit high, but you get incredible value for what you pay – their products typically last me several months, even when I use them liberally.
Product Recommendations: These two products are staples in my skincare routine. The first is the Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser. It smells like strawberries, it gently cleans skin without over-drying, and it’s packed with good-for-you antioxidants. I love following it up with the Indie Lee Co Q10 Toner – it’s a gentle, hydrating toner that leaves skin feeling fresh and silky-smooth. Because it comes with a spray nozzle, it’s perfect for freshening up your skin after a workout or throughout the day.
Ingredients are pretty much the only thing I look at when I’m considering making a skincare purchase. Drunk Elephant’s superb product packaging makes it difficult to focus on the ingredients, but thankfully, they pass the test. This skincare brand’s philosophy is to only include ingredients in their products that help the skin. The only major downside is the price – I’ll typically only buy their products on occasion as a splurge.
Product Recommendations: My favorite Drunk Elephant products are the Protini Polypeptide Moisturizer and the Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser. And while I haven’t tried it myself, I’ve heard great things about the Virgin Marula Antioxidant Face Oil.
**Not all of Drunk Elephant’s products are 100% vegan. Double-check here to make sure before you buy!
Biossance creates products that prioritize safety for you, the animals, and the environment. Good science is the backbone of their formulations. Seemingly all of their products star the ingredient Squalane, and while other skincare brands source this ingredient from shark liver, Biossance sustainably and ethically sources their Squalane from plants.
Product Recommendation: Try out the Biossance Squalane + Antioxidant Cleansing Oil. It’s a great first step to your double cleanse, as it dissolves away makeup and grime.
Non-toxic skincare has never looked so good. Herbivore Botanicals brings a uniquely minimalist yet luxurious feel to your skincare routine. I’ve tried several different samples of their products, and each time, I’ve noticed a difference in my skin overnight.
Product Recommendation: The Blue Tansy Invisible Pores Resurfacing Clarity Mask clarifies your skin without being too harsh or overdrying.
This brand has increasingly been on my radar since I started getting interested in detoxifying my products. OSEA Malibu is a family-owned business that creates a range of non-toxic skincare products. My favorite thing about this brand is its incorporation of natural seaweed straight from the ocean into some of their products. While I don’t think there’s anything wrong with skincare being “unnatural,” I find myself attracted to the simplicity of natural brands like OSEA.
Product Recommendation: OSEA’s Hyaluronic Sea Serum is great for all skin types and contains hyaluronic acid, one of the very best ingredients for adding moisture to the skin. It’s also full of tons of B-vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Juice Beauty was one of the first skincare brands I tried when I started dabbling in non-toxic skincare. I wasn’t disappointed! In addition to being non-toxic, their products are also organic. This brand is committed to sustainability, and their products deliver proven results.
Product Recommendation: The Juice Beauty Green Apple Brightening Essence is great for helping to fade stubborn hyperpigmentation or marks leftover from acne. It’s an effective treatment and it’s hydrating. This product was the first “essence” I ever purchased – it’s very similar to a toner and can be used in place of one.
Krave Beauty was started by beauty and skincare influencer Liah Yoo. Her goal in starting the brand was to create just a small amount of really great skincare products to eliminate the overwhelm people tend to experience when shopping for skincare products. This brand is one I’ll continue to buy from over and over again because the products are such great quality!
Product Recommendation: Even though I just mentioned a toner that helps with hyperpigmentation, I have to recommend another one – Krave’s Kale-Lalu-yAHA Toner. This toner is more active than the Juice Beauty Essence, so it may not be the right choice if you have ultra-sensitive skin. That being said, I have pretty sensitive skin, and I’ve never had problems with this product. Its main ingredient is Glycolic Acid, a chemical exfoliant that resurfaces skin and prevents clogged pores.
Out of all the brands on this list, Acure is the most affordable. But that doesn’t mean their products are low-quality! I’ve tried a few Acure products for my skin and hair, and while I haven’t loved the hair care products from them, they have some really great options for less expensive non-toxic skincare.
Product Recommendation: When it comes to cleansers (and any type of skincare product for that matter), I tend to subscribe to the philosophy that less is more. And the Acure Seriously Soothing Cleansing Cream fits the bill. If you’re looking for a simple cleanser that’s suitable for sensitive skin, give it a try!
I’ve been using Dr. Bronner’s soaps for years. And while I currently only use them on my body, I’ve known plenty of people who have used them on their face as well (I did too, for a while). Their products give your skin a thorough clean and they come in a variety of natural scents.
Product Recommendation: A big bottle of Dr. Bronner’s Castile Liquid Soap is a staple for every shower. If you have sensitive skin, opt for the Baby Unscented soap. I also love the Lavender scent for some calming shower aromatherapy.
These skincare brands are making the switch to clean skincare easier than ever. There’s a clean skincare brand for almost every budget and skin need, and with these brands, you’ll be able to mix and match to create a non-toxic routine you love.
